Ouarzazat

Ever since Lawrence of Arabia was shot there in 1962, Ouarzazate has been a top spot for filming. The vicinity is full of surreal scenery: steeples, Roman temples, Egyptian statues, a Tibetan temple and even the temple of Jerusalem in full-size! Ouarzazate really thumbs its nose at the course of time! Of course the town has its share of luxury hotels, expensive ... restaurants and shops. The recently restored Kasbah has been used as a movie set many a time. The town has an Artisan Cooperative with some very nice rugs worth seeing. However, shopping in Ouarzazate is pricey and the merchants inflexible. Ouarzazate lies in a valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and is popular with tourists on their way to the Sahara Desert. Scenic day trips into the surrounding regions offer a glimpse of time gone by in the ancient ruins of Kasbahs. It's also a good place to stock up on provisions for desert treks.Ouarzazat is a good place to make daytrips from to nearby highlights .

Women doing the washing ... in the river. Donkeys pulling carts. The perfect place for a walk with the palm trees towering above with the feeling of being really isolated.Fint Oasis is an incredible oasis surrounded by beautiful mountains, and this place is home to several unique villages that still maintain a different cultural life unique in the region. Being home of remaining African tribes that stayed after the sub-Sarhara camel caravans stop, these people took the Berber culture and somehow mixed their own way of life into something very interesting today. After the walk inside the gardens of Fint oasis, you will have a cup of tea with the locals.

Telouet sightseeing

Morning departure from Ouarzazate by 4x4 to Telouet Kasbah,This day trip takes you across of the High Atlas mountains and over the famous the Ounila Valley pass, one of the most dramatic passes in Morocco. All along the road you can see the Berber villages scattered ... along the side of the mountains, sometimes it is hard to be distinguished from the mountains themselves. As you reach the far side of the mountains the landscape changes dramatically, becoming semi-arid and desert-like. Here is the Kasbah architecture with turrets on all the buildings, adorned with grilled windows and soft peach coloured walls. These traditional houses are made of adobe, highly suitable for the climatic conditions of the south. the Telouate kasbah which belonged to the Pacha of the Atlas, the Glaoui, which stands in ruins after the last Pasha fled the country after the departure of the French. In the first kasbah you will visit only a few rooms that can be seen, as much of the kasbah has been closed off because of the falling ceilings and unsafe walls. However, the tiled walls, fluted pillars, beautifully painted wooden ceilings and coloured glass windows of the reception rooms allow you to imagine what it was like in its prime. After our visit to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou we will take the way back to Ouarzazate.

ounila valley

Our route follows the scenic valley of the Ounila which, like many others, has its source in the great water tower of the High Atlas Mountains. The valley extends from the prestigious Ksar of Aït Benhaddou up to the vast Kasbah of Glaoui at Telouet. Erstwhile the caravans between Marrakesh ... and Ouarzazate passed by the river through this extraordinary countryside. Gaze at the striking contrasts between the ochre of the earth and rocks and the greenery of the plantations during our drive. After arriving in Telouet we discover the Kasbah. Isolated but yet in a dominant position it expressed the authority of the bullies (representatives of the sultan) and the Pasha (governor of an imperial city). The Kasbah controlled the oases and their access roads, provided the fuel for the inhabitants of the desert and defended the caravans against the nomad’s attacks.
